External Research Partnership Guidelines
Purpose:
The purpose of this page is to describe guidelines for external parties participating in the research enterprise of the Inclusive STEM Teaching Project. These guidelines are agreed to by the members of the Project and will remain in place until they are changed or the formal NSF support for the project ends. (Note: Many of these guidelines also apply to internal research involvement.)
Goals:
To create equitable, accountable, mutually valuable partnerships that achieve a minimum level of outcomes for the Inclusive STEM Teaching Project.
Time Commitment:
The external partner commits a minimum of 3 hours per week for a minimum of one year. The 3 hours is the equivalent of one month of effort.
Compensation:
The external partner is to be compensated, either by their own means of support or through the Project. The level should be commensurate with their status and career progression.
Plan and Scope of Work:
The external partner co-creates a clear plan and scope of work together with, and approved by, the Director of Research and the Collaborative Principal Investigators that aligns with the research goals of the Project. For shorter term engagements, the plan should be detailed enough for progress to be made quickly and independently.
Outcomes and Expectations:
A clear set of outcomes, deliverables and expectations should be developed that support the mutual beneficial partnership. Authorship expectations will follow from Project authorship guidelines.
Supervision:
A member of the research team and Project is identified to supervise the partnership. In addition, for graduate student and postdoc partners, regular meetings with the external partner’s advisor occur to ensure that the external partner’s Project work is integrated into and valued by their home institution.
Location:
Work can be performed remotely.
Example:
Sabbatical – if the external partner has funding, a semester-long project can be completed with us, working in person or remotely. We would work together to develop a scope of work that would be of interest to both parties.
